Jakarta to Singapore by land or sea?

Main Post:

I'm flying in to Jakarta for a backpacking trip, then meeting my friend in Singapore 10 days later. I'd like to avoid flying, so I'm thinking of taking a Pelni ferry to Batam, then hopping over to Singapore. Alternately, I could take busses/taxis from Jakarta->Bandar Lampung->Palembang->Pekanbaru->Singapore. Do either of these strategies seem feasible for a foreigner with some travel skill and loads of patience but no knowledge of the language? Thanks!

Edit: r/indonesia may be my new favorite subreddit. You guys have been nothing but incredibly helpful with several of my questions. Thank you!

Also mountain roads. OP will be circling the mountains, which isn't exactly pleasant or fast.

"Land of Papua" ("West Papua") in Figure, 2019

Main Post:

Recognizing recent increase in "West Papua Separation" discussion within indonesia subreddit, I have gathered several key figures to perhaps give a glimpse of a theoretical state of "West Papua" or as this text will refer to as "Land of Papua".

First, the population of "Land of Papua" itself, which numbers to 4.33 Million or about 1.6% of Indonesia total population. The "Land of Papua" population is among the least "prosperous" in Indonesia as can be seen from the HDI of West Papua Province of 64.7 and Papua Province of 60.84 compared to Indonesia national HDI of 70.7. However their HDI is higher PNG's 54.3.

This "least prosper" status is also reflected through poverty level in Papua province as the highest among Indonesian provinces at 926,360 people or 27.53% of its total population. A theoretical "Land of Papua" state would have a 1,137,860 people considered below poverty line or 21.27% of its population. In comparison with the rest of Indonesia, this "Land of Papua" population amounted to 4,59% of Indonesian's people in poverty.

Next, the composition of "Land of Papua" population. As there's limited data on ethnicity diversity, this text will refer to this research, using population data from 2010 which shows that native to the "Land of Papua" is still the majority with 51.49 per cent in the province of West Papua and 76.31 per cent in the province of Papua. An interesting conclusion from that research is that Land of Papua is actually diverse or heterogeneous just like the rest of Indonesia. Most also don't have high polarization between ethnicity that could spark ethnic conflicts, however several Districts (Kabupaten/Kota) does. These highly polarized districts should be noted for new migration into "Land of Papua" especially if heavily dominated by certain ethnicity.

Similar diversity also shown when dissecting the population based on its religions, as can be seen below:

As can be seen, there's a balance between 3 most populous religion of Protestant, Islam and Catholic. Protestant in the "Land of Papua" is as large as 32.24% of population or 1,658,391 people, while Islam is only at 19.57% (or 1,022,925) and Catholics only 12.2% (or 637,495). Interestingly there's also population of Hindus, Buddhist, and Others in the "Land of Papua" of only 10,111 people or 0.19% of the population. If this text is so bold to assume that "Islam" considered as non-native's of "Land of Papua" religion. Then it can be inferred that Natives of "Land of Papua" still held significant dominance over non-natives.

Noting there's a crucial gap in the chart above labelled as "Unknown" of 35.80%, it is due to the blanks within BPS's data. However, this text argues that the other 64.20% could already give rough estimates on the religion composition within the "Land of Papua".

After thorough deliberation of the social aspect, this text will now highlight some economic data of the "Land of Papua". First and foremost, the GDP of "Land of Papua" which totaled to 274.06 Trillion Rupiahs or US$ 52,413 Million. This number contributes only 4.68% of Indonesia's GDP.

However on exports and imports, "Land of Papua" exports valuation only amounted to US$ 3,620.64 Million or 2.13% of all Indonesia. Meanwhile its imports valuation is US$ 729.65 Million or 0.43% of Indonesia's imports.

On its government, "Land of Papua" has a total budget of 28,581 Billion Rupiahs, however 92.57% of this comes from Central Government's Transfer of Funds to the Provinces. Interestingly enough, this number isn't the highest among Indonesian provinces, it is only 0.0081% of all Indonesia's Transfer to Regional (Transfer ke Daerah) Government Budget even though "Land of Papua" have special additional budget allocations from "special autonomy budget" and "additional infrastructure budget".

The author hope that this text could provide the basis to begin to realize the unique characteristics of "Land of Papua" and its population. The "Land of Papua" still need much development, even though it already has special additional budgets allocated to it, the number still relatively small compared to other more developed provinces. The author hypothesize this imbalances due to Government of Indonesia's (GoI's) priority in development as developing country.

As additional note, the author noted several gaps within BPS published data, there are also inconsistencies between level of government, and less detailed data in the higher levels of government. Therefore, the author suggest GoI to support more data sampling and processing in the "Land of Papua" to give a better image on its condition through numbers which would provide a good foundation for future developments and policies.

How did the islands of Indonesia break apart like they have? Were they ever, say a peninsula off of Asia? Were they ever a part of Australia?

They aren’t broken apart, as a matter of fact they are still on the same plate. They are just the flooded high elevation remains of a landmass known as Sundaland. (It still exists as but like 60% of it is submerged). Basically the light blue outline around Indonesia is the ancient coastline of the place. It was most recently above sea level during the last Glacial Maximum.

Why doesn't Indonesia just push themselves together? It seems like they're wasting a lot of effort on creating more coastlines...
